Villarreal 1-0 Bayern: Danjuma’s Goal Helps Emery’s Side Beat Bundesliga Giant

Villarreal upset Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich by winning the first leg of their quarter-final tie 1-0.

Bayern started quickly but without producing clear-cut chances, and they were startled when Villarreal scored with their opening effort on eight minutes.

Gerard Moreno and Giovani Lo Celso linked up down the right flank, with the Tottenham loanee reaching the byline and passing the ball to Dani Parejo with the outside of his left foot.

He pushed it goalwards from the edge of the six-yard box with a shot that lacked the velocity to beat Manuel Neuer, but it was redirected into the corner by Danjuma for a 1-0 lead.

Bayern tried to reply swiftly, but the Villarreal response was summed up by a thunderous challenge from Raul Albiol on Serge Gnabry just inside the penalty area.

Bayern enjoyed possession of the ball, but Emery’s team was combative and well-organized, and they could have made it two right before halftime.

Parejo snuck Francis Coquelin between the cracks. On the left side of the penalty box, he was in rather uncharted terrain when he put over a crossshot that flew over Neuer’s net and landed just inside his back post. The goal was ruled out because he was on the wrong side of the last defender.

Villarreal went close again after the restart, with Gerard Moreno rocking Neuer’s goal frame with a low strike from distance that came off the post.

Villarreal have dropped to seventh place in La Liga after losing three of their last five league games, but they have undergone a transformation in Europe.

Villarreal kept their advantage. The Allianz Arena will be packed with 52,000 people next week. The club from the 50,000-person Spanish town has given themselves a strong chance to advance.
