Tottenham Hotspur moved into fourth place in the Premier League with a 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle United, while West Ham United’s 2-1 win over Everton brought the Toffees closer to relegation.
Antonio Conte’s team completed a stunning comeback to win their fifth league game in a row. Newcastle took the lead through Fabian Schar, but Ben Davies equalized in north London before the break.
Tottenham went over arch rivals Arsenal on goal difference at halftime with to goals from Matt Doherty, Son Heung-min, Emerson Royal, and Steven Bergwijn.
Arsenal can reclaim fourth place if they avoid defeat at Crystal Palace on Monday. They have two games in hand on Tottenham.
Regardless of the outcome, Tottenham are definitely in contention to qualify for next season’s Champions League, despite Conte’s suggestion that finishing in the top four would be a miracle.
Newcastle took the lead against the run of play in the 39th minute when Schar’s free-kick from the edge of the area caught Hugo Lloris off guard and escaped his poor save.
Son’s eye – catching cross was flicked home by Davies from six yards four minutes later, bringing Tottenham level for the first time since 2017.
When Tottenham took the lead in the 48th minute, Harry Kane provided the assist, whipping in a wonderful cross that Doherty stooped to head in from close range.
