The UEFA Champions League season 2021-22 has reached the quarterfinal stage, with eight of Europe’s finest teams remaining. To get to this point, the teams had to play six games in the group stage and a two-legged Round of 16 match.
The teams have already faced one knockout circumstance in the Round of 16, which has prepared them for the rest of the campaign.
Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Villarreal, and Benfica are the eight teams left in the competition this year. The competition appears to be different this year than in past years due to the abolition of the away goal rule.
Because of the intense nature of the competition, reaching the quarterfinals is an indicator of a team’s strength in Europe. Surprisingly, many of Europe’s strongest teams in the past did not even make it to the competition’s final eight in 2021-22.
Now, here are the five teams that have appeared in the Champions League quarterfinals the most times since it was renamed in 1992.
- Juventus(12 appearances)
Juventus, an Italian powerhouse, is one of Europe’s most powerful clubs. Since the competition’s establishment in 1992, the Turin-based side has reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League 12 times.
Juventus last won the title in 1995-96, losing in the finals in 1997, 1998, 2003, 2015, and 2017. Their previous participation in the quarterfinals was in 2019, when they were defeated 3-2 on aggregate by a great Ajax side. Juventus is the second most successful Italian team in Europe, behind AC Milan.
In each of the previous three seasons, Juventus has been eliminated in the Round of 16 stage by Olympique Lyonnais, FC Porto, and Villarreal. Villarreal knocked them out of the competition this season after a 4-1 aggregate win for the Europa League champions.
- Manchester United(14 appearances)
Manchester United are without a doubt one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe. They are one of the most decorated English teams in Champions League history. Since the competition’s beginning 30 years ago, they have advanced to the quarterfinals 14 times.
Manchester United last won the competition in 2008, when they beat Chelsea in the final on penalties in Moscow. Since then, they’ve lost the 2009 and 2011 finals to Barcelona, led by Pep Guardiola. In 2019, they faced the same club in the quarterfinals, and they lost 4-0 on aggregate.
Manchester United have struggled to match their past seasons’ performances in recent seasons. Only twice in the last four seasons have the Red Devils qualified for the Champions League. This year, they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Atletico Madrid, the Spanish champions.
- Real Madrid(18 appearances)
Real Madrid have a history of being one of Europe’s top teams. They have won the most UEFA Champions League titles in the competition’s history. In their 30 years of participation, they have qualified for the quarterfinals 18 times.
Real Madrid last won the competition in 2018, completing a three-year winning streak.
It followed their victories in 2016 and 2017. Last season, Los Blancos advanced to the quarterfinals before succumbing to eventual champions Chelsea.
They advanced to the final eight by defeating star-studded Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16 of this season’s edition. They have won the competition a total of 13 times, with seven of those victories coming since 1992. They were victorious in the years 1998, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
- FC Barcelona(18 appearances)
Since the competition’s establishment in 1992, Spanish powerhouse Barcelona has also reached the quarterfinals 18 times. The Blaugrana are one of the most successful football clubs in Spain’s history.
The last time Barcelona won the competition was in 2015. They followed that up with near-misses in 2018 and 2019, when they were thrashed in the final stages of both seasons. In 2020, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals after a record-breaking 8-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich.
As seen by their failure to advance past the group stage this season, Barcelona is no longer the force it once was. They’ve also fallen in the round of 16 in each of the previous two seasons. Since the renaming, Barcelona has won the competition four times: in 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2015.
- Bayern Munich(20 appearances)
Since 1992, Bayern Munich have made the most appearances in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Since then, they’ve made the quarterfinals 20 times in 30 seasons, making them the most successful German team ever.
The last time they won the Champions League was in 2020, when they defeated PSG in the final. They’ve only missed the quarterfinals once in the last ten years, in 2018-19. Liverpool, the eventual victors, knocked them out in the Round of 16 back then.
Bayern Munich defeated Red Bull Salzburg in the competition’s Round of 16 this season. Only three times since 1992 have they won the competition: in 2001, 2013 and 2020.
