Andreas Christensen may be on his way out of Chelsea Football Club soon. The centre-back has been one of the better defenders for the Blues in recent months, but his contract is scheduled to expire in the summer.
Barcelona is also close to completing a free transfer of the Danish defender.
Under Thomas Tuchel, the Blues have won all of their trophies thanks to an excellent and incredibly frugal defense. However, they may lose three defenders this summer including Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger whose contracts will expire this summer.
The departure of Christensen will be the most devastating for Chelsea, as he is still only 25 years old. Due to the possibility of him leaving, the West London team will need to recruit successors.
On that subject, here are five players who may fill Christensen’s shoes at Chelsea.
Matthias Ginter is currently one of the most well-rounded central defenders in international football. While Borussia Monchengladbach has struggled this season in the Bundesliga, Ginter has continued to thrive.
The German team has one of the worst defensive records in the Bundesliga, but very little of that can be blamed on Ginter. The German international has been a thorn in the side of some of the league’s greatest scorers and has also been composed when passing out from the back.
He is a strong defender both with and without the ball. Additionally, his stature and style of play are comparable to Christensen’s, with both players remaining highly composed under duress.
He has previously expressed his intention to quit the club, and Chelsea could recruit him on a free transfer following Christensen’s permanent departure.
Trevoh Chalobah has rapidly established himself as one of Thomas Tuchel’s preferred center backs. After a few loan spells, the Chelsea academy graduate made his senior team debut this season.
On his Premier League debut, he kept a clean sheet and scored a goal, and he has not looked back since. The Englishman is young and quick, and he also possesses an exceptional sense of position, which helps him perform better in one-on-one scenarios.
Chalobah is already establishing himself as a genuine Chelsea player, having appeared in more league games (15) than Christensen (14) this season. Chalobah is an ideal like-for-like successor to Christensen at Stamford Bridge next season.
Ronald Araujo has been one of Barcelona’s top performers this season. Although Xavi has resurrected the Nou Camp side, the centre-back has been a model of consistency throughout the campaign.
Araujo, who is only 23, is already a starter for the five-time Champions League champions. The Uruguayan international is aggressive in tackles but is rarely sent off.
His passing range is also impressive, and he is now utilizing the tiki-taka style that Xavi so brilliantly exploited at Barcelona. Chelsea require a defensively sound player who is just as creative with his passing. Araujo satisfies all employment requirements.
Additionally, the South American ace is in the final 18 months of his deal, making him a sellable commodity if the La Liga team requires cash. If they decide to release him, the Blues may examine the Barcelona star as a possible replacement for Christensen.
Matthijs de Ligt
The Dutchman has continued to put up stunning displays for Juventus this season and has been instrumental in the club’s pursuit of a top-four finish in Serie A.
The centre-back is an excellent passer of the ball and possesses a high level of awareness. One of the benefits of having De Ligt is his versatility, as he is capable of playing in both back four and back three formations. Additionally, the Dutch international is a threat in set-piece situations, frequently getting his head to the ball first at corners.
De Ligt might be a good replacement for Christensen, as Tuchel also values flexible centre-backs and players capable of being dangerous from set-pieces.
For nearly a year, Jules Kounde has been linked with a move to Chelsea. Since last summer, the Sevilla ace has been outstanding in Spain and has been linked with a move to England.
Sevilla’s defense has been the most thrifty in La Liga this season as a result of his partnership with Diego Carlos. He is one of the hottest properties in European football due to his agility, strength on the ball, and imaginative passing.
Chelsea has been very interested in him, and if Christensen leaves in the summer, Kounde could be a top priority for the Blues.
