Southampton 0-6 Chelsea: Mount Nets Brace As The Saints Suffers Embarrassing Loss To Reigning UCL Champions

Chelsea thrashed Southampton 6-0, thanks to goals from Mason Mount and Timo Werner, after suffering back-to-back defeats.

The Blues were thrashed 4-1 by Brentford at home in their previous Premier League match before losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

Any doubts about their form were erased with a merciless display at St Mary’s, which began with Marcos Alonso’s eighth-minute goal.

Chelsea led 3-0 after just 21 minutes and had a six-goal lead within an hour as Southampton wilted in the sun, avoiding another 9-0 defeat.

Mount set up Alonso for the opener with a wonderful flick before the England midfielder produced a nice finish.

Werner had already hit the post and the crossbar before sprinting away from Jan Bednarek, rounding Fraser Forster and slotting Chelsea’s third goal into an empty net from an angle.

After capitalizing on more poor Southampton defence, the attacker hit the woodwork for the third time in the first half, and the rebound dropped to Kai Havertz, who tapped in.

Before halftime, Forster had to make saves from Havertz and Rudiger, while Mount came close with a deflected effort.

Chelsea, on the other hand, picked up where they left off in the second half, when Werner converted into an empty goal after Forster had saved Ngolo Kante’s shot.

Che Adams came close for Southampton, but Edouard Mendy denied him at close range.

Another Forster save denied Werner a hat-trick, but the rebound dropped easily for Mount to knock in for a straightforward sixth to put Chelsea right back on track.
