Roma 1-1 Vitesse: Tammy Abraham Scores As Giallorossi Advance To The Europa League Quarter Final

After Vitesse threatened to reach extra time, Roma advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals thanks to Tammy Abraham’s point-blank header in the final minute.

After winning the first leg 1-0 in Arnhem, the Giallorossi could afford to draw here and still go to the quarter-finals.

With Leonardo Spinazzola still injured, Sergio Oliviera and Gianluca Mancini were suspended, while Vitesse had Alois Dominik Oroz suspended and Matus Bero on the treatment table.

The hosts were off to a rocky start, as Adrian Grbic had a free kick from a long distance that dropped violently, forcing Rui Patricio to flap it out from under the bar.

Jordan Veretout’s shot from beyond the box went wide, while Matias Vina’s long-range strike grazed the far post.

A long-range free kick from Lorenzo Pellegrini did the same, but the deadlock was broken by the first bit of quality in the entire contest.

With the outside of his left boot, Maximilian Wittek struck a terrific volley from 20 meters out that swung outwards and into the near bottom corner beyond Rui Patricio.

On 72 minutes, Roma wanted Rasmussen to receive a second yellow card for handball, but he was lying on the ground at the time, so the referee instead booked both Zaniolo and Jose Mourinho for dissent.

On a Pellegrini free kick, Bryan Cristante forced a near-post save, while Pellegrini’s acrobatic volley from 10 yards on a Tammy Abraham knock-down was over.

Grbic missed a good chance to put Vitesse 2-0 up as he scuffed an angled drive wide after being sent free by Openda.

Until the final minute, when Roma grabbed an equalizer and hence a win on aggregate, the match was heading to extra time. Rick Karsdorp intercepted Stephan El Shaarawy’s cross at the far post, knocking it back for Abraham’s yard header.
