Messi Sets Record For Most Missed Penalties in UCL History

Lionel Messi has equaled Thierry Henry’s Champions League record for missed penalties while overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of penalty attempts.

He has missed five of his 23 penalty attempts in the competition, the most recent coming in Tuesday’s last-16 win over Real Madrid by Paris Saint-Germain.

After Kylian Mbappe had won the penalty kick, Thibaut Courtois dove the perfect way to deny Messi.

Outside of Messi’s saved penalty, chances to score were scarce in the first leg between European heavyweights, with Real Madrid content to sit back and defend at the Parc des Princes.

PSG, though, scored in stoppage time to win 1-0, with Kylian Mbappe striking through Courtois’ legs.

Messi has struggled at times during his debut season at PSG, yet he has been involved in four goals in his last four appearances.

And it was Mbappe who carried the majority of the burden on Tuesday, hitting a superb individual goal in stoppage time to win the match.
