Former soccer player and manager from Spain, Carles Rexach was a winger for Barcelona for sixteen years, and he also played for Condal on loan. He scored two goals were scored in 15 appearances for the Spanish national team.
After retiring from football, Rexach entered the world of coaching. Before becoming the assistant manager of Barcelona Team B, he served as Catalonia’s youth coach from 1982 to 1983. He coached the Barcelona youth team and served as an assistant coach for the senior squad.
In 2001, he became Barcelona’s manager, but he resigned the following year. Rexach is primarily recognised as the scout who “discovered” a 13-year-old Lionel Messi.
He claims he heard about a young, talented footballer who once played for Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina. He was shocked to learn that the player was only 13 years old. That player was Messi.
After observing Messi play, he was absolutely convinced of his potential and decided to bring him to Barcelona. The rest is legendary.
