Aston Villa finished their Australian preseason tour with a dramatic 2-2 tie against Manchester United. For the first 45 minutes, Philippe Coutinho was positioned slightly off of Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins as Steven Gerrard’s team struggled to keep up.
After 25 minutes, Jadon Sancho opened the scoring by volleying in at the far post following a brilliant pick-out by Luke Shaw. But just before halftime, Matty Cash redirected Marcus Rashford’s shot into his own goal, leaving Villa behind 2-0.
At halftime, Gerrard switched things up by substituting Leon Bailey for Robin Olsen, Ezri Konsa, Emi Buendia, and Douglas Luiz, and it was Bailey who seemed motivated once more and scored just four minutes after coming on. The Jamaican international sprinted towards Victor Lindelof, who turned around and scored a goal past David de Gea by caressing the ball into the far corner after being given room.
A few seconds later, Bailey was back at it, rushing at United’s goal with his right foot this time. Anthony Martial deflected it over, but Bailey was still at it when Harry Maguire slid back just in time to block his shot.
Villa made five additional substitutions shortly after the hour mark, and Gerrard switched to a more conventional 4-3-3 shape. With Villa playing considerably better, Calum Chambers headed in Bailey’s corner for the game-winning goal just at the buzzer.
