Jurgen Klopp looks set to spend €100 million on signing Darwin Nunez but claimed he will never sign a player for £100 million six years ago.
Klopp was responding to Manchester United breaking the world transfer record in the summer of 2016 by signing Paul Pogba from Juventus for a fee of £100m after add-ons and agents’ costs were taken into account.
“The day that spending £100m is football, I’m not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together,” Klopp revealed.
He added, “That is how everybody in football understands it. You always want to have the best, but building a group is necessary to be successful.
“If you bring one player in for £100m and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney. “Other clubs can go out and spend more money and collect top players.
“I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money.”
Six years on and Klopp has now been labelled a hypocrite in a report published by Football Transfer.
