Jarrod Bowen may not be the greatest like-for-like replacement for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, according to John Barnes.
Salah’s future at Anfield is uncertain because he is yet to agree on a contract extension for his current deal, which runs until the end of next season.
Bowen has been considered as a possible successor to the Egyptian in Liverpool’s attack as his amazing run at West Ham continues.
In the Premier League this season, the 25-year-old has eight goals and eight assists, with only Salah directly contributing to more goals.
Barnes, though, is not convinced that Bowen can fill Salah’s shoes, despite his belief that the West Ham player may transfer to a ‘top five team.
“Bowen will never be able to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool. Jarrod Bowen is a different type of player than Mo. He isn’t going to score 30 goals in a season, and that isn’t what he does. Is he talented enough to play for a major top-five club? Absolutely”, Barnes explained to BonusCodeBets.
West Ham fans would likely dispute Barnes’ thought of a ‘major top five club,’ given that the Hammers are presently in fifth place in the Premier League rankings, just two points behind Manchester United and ahead of Arsenal and Tottenham.
Following his outstanding season, the East London side are contemplating contract discussions with Bowen this summer, according to the Evening Standard.
The Hammers have a contract with the former Hull City midfielder until 2025, but they want to lock down his future amid Liverpool’s interest.
