Inter 0-2 Liverpool: Roberto Firmino Becomes Champion As Salah Scores

Liverpool won 2-0 at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on Wednesday night, putting them in a good position for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter vs Inter.

Both Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored in the final quarter of an hour to give Jurgen Klopp’s side a comfortable lead to take home to Merseyside, but it could have been a lot tighter if Simone Inzaghi’s side had seized the chances that came their way.

Inter did well on the night, but the Reds always had a small advantage over their Italian rivals and appeared more inclined to take advantage of chances than their hosts, which has been a major problem for the Nerazzurri in Europe this season.

The game’s opening shot went wide for Lautaro Martinez, but Sadio Mane got the first chance that should have been converted. The recently crowned Africa Cup of Nations champion was found in the six-yard box by a superb Andy Robertson ball, but his header went beyond Samir Handanovic’s crossbar.

Inter reacted quickly and drew even closer. Ivan Perisic did well on the left to find Hakan Calhanoglu in the box, and the Turk took his time to set himself up before slamming a close-range shot against the crossbar.

Other opportunities fell to both sides, but none were clear-cut. Calhanoglu and Trent Alexander-Arnold both shot wide, but Inter failed to get a single shot on target, and Liverpool’s second on target scored the game’s first goal in the 75th minute.

With 15 minutes remaining, another Robertson cross struck its mark; this time, his corner fell on the head of Roberto Firmino at the near post, and the Brazilian’s beautiful header sailed across Handanovic’s goal and in, right beside the upright.

Inter conceded a second goal eight minutes later, as if going to Anfield with a one-goal deficit wasn’t difficult enough. Mohamed Salah was the quickest in the area to react to a loose ball and strike a low shot past Handanovic, who was caught off guard by a deflected effort.
