Griezmann Could Return To Barcelona Due To Uncertainty Surrounding Simeone’s Future

If Diego Simeone leaves Atletico Madrid this summer, forward Antoine Griezmann, who is currently on loan from Barcelona, might return to Camp Nou.

Griezmann has struggled to maintain his standing as one of the top attackers in the world after joining the Blaugrana for €120 million in 2019. He was loaned out to Atletico Madrid ahead of the 2021-22 season after a disappointing two-season tenure with Barcelona.

The return to his old club, though, has not been as fruitful as many had hoped. This season, the 30-year-old has only scored eight times in 22 games in all competitions, much below expectations.

The Red and Whites are said to be dissatisfied with the player’s performance and may try to offload him next summer. According to El Nacional, the Frenchman’s time at Wanda Metropolitano could come to an end early in the 2021-22 season.

Griezmann’s contract states that Atletico may only keep him if he is used in 50% of the games in which he is available. They can use the €40 million purchase option provided in his contract once they achieve those requirements. The 2018 World Cup winner will return to his parent club Barcelona if the purchase clause is not activated.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone admires Griezmann and wants him to stay at the club. However, given the dismal start to the season for Los Rojiblancos, even the coach’s job is in jeopardy.

Griezmann is reportedly unwilling to return to Camp Nou because Barcelona plans to spend his €40 million transfer fee to buy new players.

Xavi, on the other hand, is unconcerned with the arrival of the 2018 World Cup winner. Griezmann’s work rate, according to the former Barcelona midfielder, would benefit his club, and the player will easily fit into his system.
