Crystal Palace’s Patrick Vieira revolution took another step forward on Monday night, when the Eagles defeated Arsenal 3-0 at Selhurst Park.
Palace went into halftime with a two-goal advantage thanks to goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew, and Wilfried Zaha added gloss to the victory with a penalty conversion in the second half.
Conor Gallagher’s deep free-kick was headed across goal by Joachim Anderson 16 minutes into the game, giving Mateta the opportunity to head in from a few yards away.
Vieira’s side were in dreamland just eight minutes later, as Gabriel missed Anderson’s superb through ball, giving Ayew enough time to curl a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner.
With 16 minutes remaining in normal time, Zaha was given the opportunity to score Palace’s third goal from the penalty spot after being fouled by Martin Odegaard. Then Zaha stepped up and sent Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to put Palace ahead 3-0.
This will be a difficult pill to swallow for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta, who still have a game in hand on Tottenham Hotspur after beating Newcastle United 5-1 to move up to fourth in the table.
