Chelsea Goalkeeper Explains Why Winning AFCON is More Important Than UEFA Champions League

Edouard Mendy of Senegal says winning the Africa Cup of Nations gave him “10 times the goosebumps” of winning the UEFA Champions League.

Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper was instrumental in the club’s UEFA Champions League triumph last season, keeping the most clean sheets as the English giants won the competition.

In an interview with French magazine Onze Mondial, the former Stade Renne goalie ranked his triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations as his greatest achievement.

“Yes, I said that winning the CAN was stronger than winning the Champions League (smile). Some people disagree with me. But already, this sentence is a feeling, so no one can interpret my feeling for me,” he said.

“Two, I won the CAN and the European Cup, so I can speak, I can say that there is a difference. When I say that the CAN gave me 10 times more chills, that’s my feeling. That’s really what happened.

“Afterwards, when we won the Champions League, we were in the Covid period. We didn’t do a parade, we didn’t make communion with the supporters, so that also matters. And when you see what happened in Dakar after the CAN, I can say that it’s 10 times stronger!.”

Edouard Mendy was pivotal in Senegal’s victory at AFCON 2021, saving two penalties as the Teranga Lions overcame Egypt to claim their first ever title.

Earlier this week, Sports Brief reported that Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was at a loss for words to describe the Teranga Lions’ Africa Cup of Nations victory a week ago.

He rejoined his Chelsea teammates a few hours after Senegal’s AFCON-winning team had a hero’s welcome in Dakar, to assist the Blues in their pursuit of another trophy.

After making history with Senegal, the 29-year-old couldn’t believe what he saw upon their return to Dakar.
