Bayern 1-1 Villarreal (1-2 AGG): Chukwueze’s Late Goal Sends Emery’s Side To UCL Semi-Finals

Villarreal are in the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2006. On Tuesday, Unai Emery’s team scored a late equalizer at Bayern Munich to take a 2-1 aggregate lead and advance past the German giants.

A 1-0 first-leg win gave Villarreal a little advantage over Bayern in the second leg, but there was a sense that the LaLiga Santander team would come to regret the game’s squandered opportunities in Spain, where a one-goal lead didn’t tell the entire story.

When Robert Lewandowski put Bayern ahead, those anxieties would have deepened, but it was the hosts’ sole shot on target.

Despite having far more possession, Villarreal threatened early through Gerard Moreno, but they were caught off guard when Leroy Sane set out for Joshua Kimmich, only for the latter to miss his header.

The hosts won despite mounting tensions in the arena, but that was to be the best Lewandowski and his teammates could hope for.

Villarreal remained convinced that they were responsible for another huge murder, and they were right.

Samuel Chukwueze came off the bench to score the game-winning goal in the 88th minute, just as the game appeared to be heading to extra time.

Despite finishing seventh in LaLiga Santander, Villarreal will now wait to see if Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will join them in the semi-finals.
