Memphis Depay declined an offer from the Ghana Football Association to be named in the Black Stars squad due to how his father treated him when he was a kid.
The 28-year-old Barcelona striker was born to a Ghanaian father and a Dutch mother, making him eligible to play for the Black Stars.
Depay, who holds dual citizenship in Ghana and the Netherlands, choose to represent his birth nation, the European powerhouse.
In an interview with the BBC in 2021, Depay made the shocking disclosure that he was abandoned by his father, Dennis Depay, when he was a child. Cora Schensema, his mother, raised him from infancy until he was fully grown.
“I will never forgive him. Do not call me Depay, call me Memphis,” Depay told BBC as quoted by Tribuna.
“No, I don’t want to explain exactly what happened at home because I don’t want to make people feel ashamed. And that’s how it will remain because I’ve already moved on,” Depay added.
On the other hand, Depay has established charitable organizations in Ghana to carry out numerous projects.
In 2019, he made his first visit to Ghana, donating athletic equipment to the Cape Coast Deaf and Blind School and the Ghana Blind Sports Association.
Depay has been to Ghana a few times since then to keep up his charitable work with the people there.
