9 Top Record Sales Chelsea Made Which Generated Much Funds For The Club During The Roman Abramovich Era

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich is no more the owner of Chelsea, but during his time the club enjoyed a great deal of success on and off the pitch.

In the era of the 55-year old business mogul, Chelsea accumulated 1,449 points in the Premier League, won 21 trophies but also changed 15 managers and spent a sum total of £2.1 billion mainly on the recruitment of players.

However, the Blues still made some decent cash from the sales of these nine players in the transfer market.

  • Thibaut Courtois

Courtois was on loan at Atletico Madrid during the 2013/14 season but had to return back to the Stamford Bridge when Jose Mourinho was appointed. The Belgian went on to win the Premier League title twice with Chelsea before he joined Real Madrid who paid £35m for his services in 2018.

  • Juan Mata

Before his departure in 2014, Mata was already considered a cult hero by Chelsea supporters for his brilliant contributions to the club on the field of play.

Unfortunately, the Spaniard was deemed surplus to requirements under Mourinho and had to be sold to Man United for a fee of £37m.

  • Tammy Abraham

In Frank Lampard’s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, Abraham was the main man in Chelsea’s attack, but after Thomas Tuchel took over as manager, the England international was frozen out of the starting XI, leading to his £38m exit to Roma last summer.

  • Nemanja Matic

Matic was a key player for Chelsea before he decided to take on a new challenge at Man United, with Chelsea receiving £40m from the Red Devils for the Serbian midfielder.

  • Alvaro Morata

The Spanish striker underperformed in West London after his arrival from Real Madrid in 2017. Chelsea later decided to cut their losses but still received a sizeable fee from the sale of Morata (£48.5m).

  • David Luiz

Luiz was part of the historic team that won Chelsea’s first ever Champions League trophy in 2012.

The Brazilian eventually left for Paris Saint Germain in a deal which saw Chelsea earn £50m from his sale.

  • Diego Costa

Costa left Chelsea as fans’ favorite despite falling out with Antonio Conte. The Spaniard was sold to Atletico Madrid in 2017 £50m.

  • Oscar

The Brazilian was loved by many during his time at Chelsea. Sadly, he chose a different path where he could earn more money. Chelsea got £60m from the player’s sale in 2017.
