8 Things You Didn’t Know About Luka Modric

At 36, Modric is still on top of his game for Real Madrid and he wears the captain armband for the Croatian national team.

He has won a lot of trophies with the club and has finally come to an of his career.

However, here are 8 things you didn’t know about Luka Modric:

1. A Tragic Childhood

He was born in 1984, and he grew up to the soundtrack of bombs and wars. The Croatian war of independence broke out when he was six years old bringing Croatian and Serbian forces against each other.

Soon after, his grandfather was assassinated by militants and they were very close. Haunted and threatened with death, Modric’s family had no choice but to flee.

Though a refugee, he found a way to forget about his troubles by developing a love for football.

2. Underdeveloped

Today, Modric stands at 1.72m and weighs 66 kilos. At 10 years old, Modric was already pocket-sized and that didn’t appeal to scout.

He impressed Dinamo Zagreb despite recent rejections but they were also hesitant. In 2003, he was loaned out to Mostar and he excelled and was named the Bosnian Premier League player of the year.

He returned to Dinamo and signed a 10-year contract and he won 3 league titles in a roll. In 2008, he move to Tottenham Hotspur for €21million.

3. Love for Croatia

He began his international career in 2006 and with Croatia, he has participated in 4 Euros and 3 World Cup tournaments.

He formed a formidable midfield partnership with Ivan Rakitic and overtook Darijo Srna to become the most capped Croatian player of all time in 2021.

He also led his country to the 2018 world cup final. He holds a record number of caps for his nation and started 2022 with 114 caps.

4. World Cup’s Best Players

The world cup was in touching distance, so close, but yet so far. After a formidable goal in the group stage against Argentina, his side beat Russia and England before facing France in the final but they were defeated 4-1.

He was however named the Player of the tournament but the trophy has been caused for 20 years now.

Since 1998, it has been awarded to a player on the losing side in the final.

5. A Historic Absence

Real Madrid won the third consecutive Champions League title in 2018 and Modric won the Balon D’Or that year.

He became the first Croatian to win the award after Davor Suker cane second in 1998. He also broke Ronaldo and Messi’s reign since Kaka won the trophy in 2007.

How he struggled after winning the award which is one of the pressures one faces for winning the award.

He didn’t even feature in the 30-man shortlist for the 2019 Balon D’Or and that’s the first time in history that the current holder couldn’t defend the title. He then helped Real Madrid win the Laliga trophy in 2020.

6. A Family Man

He is a proud father of a boy and two girls and unlike many of his teammates, he is a simple man.

He has no tattoos and does not go on holidays to flash party islands. Instead, he prefers to relax in Croatia with his family and friends.

7. Nicknames

He has many nicknames but he is mostly known as Zouko. In Tottenham, his creative ability earned him the name Mozart.

His Real Madrid teammates call him Vinegar which is a Spanish term for someone who gets annoyed quickly.

8. Icon

Even though he won most trophies with Cristiano Ronaldo, his favourite player is Delma Ronaldo.

He loved him so much and even counted on him to protect him by having a photo of him on his shin pads.

“I use to have shin pads with his face on and it saved me from a serious injury once,” Luka Modric told My Game in 2010.
