7 Most Decorated African Players In Europe

Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o are often regarded as the most successful African footballers to have played in Europe, but who has won the most titles across the  five major leagues?

Despite the fact that European and South American footballers have long dominated European football, African players have had tremendous success in the continent’s top divisions.

Eto’o, Cameroon’s all-time leading scorer, won 15 titles in Europe’s top five divisions, including two trebles in a row while playing for FC Barcelona and Inter Milan.

The former striker’s first victory came in the form of the Copa del Rey in the 2002/03 season with Mallorca, before going on to win another eight trophies with the Catalan club.

After falling out of favor with Pep Guardiola, Eto’o joined Inter in 2010 and went on to win six more championships in Italy, including the Serie A and UEFA Champions League titles.

With 15 trophies under his belt, the former Indomitable Lion is only the third most successful African footballer in Europe’s top leagues, trailing only Seydou Keita, a former Barca teammate.

During his European career, the Malian midfielder won 17 team awards, but who holds the record for the most trophies won by an African player in Europe’s top five leagues? Bruce Grobbelaar, to be precise. During his amazing Liverpool career, the South African-born goalkeeper won 19 trophies, including six league crowns.

Despite being born in Durban, the former shot-stopper played 38 times for Zimbabwe at international level between 1980 and 1998.
