5 Players Who Received Emotional Farewells During Their Last Game For Their Clubs

Real Madrid’s legendary full back,Marcelo Vieira was given a king’s send-off at the Santiago Bernabeu a few hours ago as he finally bidded goodbye to the club he signed up for as a boy. The 34 year old left back was leaving Real Madrid after 15 years as the club’s full back.

Marcelo Vieira’s 15 year stay at Real Madrid saw him become the club’s most decorated footballer with 25 trophies to his name, which included five Champions League trophies,three LaLiga Santander titles,three super cups and club world cup trophies,and many other trophies.

During his farewell speech to the club he signed up for as teenager and is now leaving as a legend, Marcelo Vieira let his emotions get the better of him as he cried in front of the audience who came to watch him bid his final farewell. It took a few minutes before the Brazilian could compose himself and finally read out the last part of his farewell speech.

Marcelo Vieira joined a list of some top footballers who let their feelings take the better of them and shed some tears on the day they were to say goodbye to their former clubs.

1. Marcelo Vieira (Real Madrid)

As stated above,Real Madrid’s Marcelo Vieira was moved to tears in the presence of guests and the entire Real Madrid staff during his farewell speech to the club he gave 15 dedicated years of his football career. He is therefore number one on our list.

2. Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)

On the 8th of August 2021, seven time ballon d’or winner, Lionel Messi cried openly at a press conference organized for him to say goodbye to FC Barcelona. 

A lot of controversial LaLiga rules,salary and wages structure forced out the six time golden boot winner from the club,and his farewell speech to the Blaugranas last year only served to aggrieve him further.

He was later to join Paris Saint Germain the following summer where he won the Ligue 1 title and the ballon d’or.

3. Sergio Aguero (FC Barcelona)

On the 15th of December 2021,former Manchester City’s striker,Sergio Aguero announced his retirement from active football at a tearful press conference held at Camp Nou.

The Argentine forward who had a lot of heart problems in the preceding months was forced to retire in order to keep his health in check,and cried openly in the press conference, midway into his speech.

4. Andres Iniesta (FC Barcelona)

In April 2018,FC Barcelona’s legendary midfielder,Andres Iniesta announced that he will be leaving the club after the season is over.

The four time Champions League winner who was later to hold a press conference almost broke down while recounting the memorable times he had spent with the Spanish club.

5. Francesco Totti (AS Roma)

In 2017,AS Roma’s former player, Francesco Totti announced that he was leaving the club after 25 eventful years with them.

The Italy born footballer who is often used as the SI Unit for measuring loyalty in football due to his longevity at the Italian club was moved to tears at the Stadio Olimpico during his farewell, which further went to show how love and commitment to the only club he ever played for as a professional footballer.
