5 Of The Greatest Players to Wear Chelsea Number 10 Jerseys

The number ten shirt has been a sought-after number among creative players over the years. While it may not be as revered as the number nine shirt at Chelsea in recent years Steve Sidwell and Khalid Boulahrouz has worn the jersey, the number 10 shirt has seen many outstanding players represent the Blues.

With that in mind, let us take a look back at some of Chelsea’s best players who have worn the number 10.

  • Christian Pulisic

Pulisic has only had 3 seasons at Stamford Bridge to prove himself, but it’s apparent he’ll be a better player than Jokanovic and Benayoun. In fact, he may soon overtake others on the list ahead of him. In 34 games during his first season with Chelsea, the American scored 11 goals and added 10 assists. Though he has not been playing well recently, as a matter of fact he flopped last season but the forward will be a star for many years to come and is well-deserving of the No. 10 jersey.

  • Juan Mata

Chelsea became the first London club to win the Champions League in Mata’s debut season, with the Spaniard providing the assist for Didier Drogba’s dramatic late equalizer against Bayern Munich in the final. The west Londoners’ European triumph followed a historic FA Cup double, with Mata scoring in a sensational 5-1 hammering of Tottenham in the last four. Mata was named Chelsea’s Player of the Season during his rookie season, and he kept the award the following season in one of the most underappreciated individual seasons in Premier League history.

  • Willian

Hazard’s no.10 shirt was passed on to another of the club’s attacking geniuses, Willian, after he signed off with a two-goal performance in 2019 Europa League final victory against Arsenal. The Brazilian’s lone season with the number may not have yielded any titles, but he played a key role in Frank Lampard’s young team, scoring 11 goals and becoming the only player in Premier League history to score a goal in every month of the year.

Joe Cole

Cole made 282 games for Chelsea, winning six major awards, including three league titles, and was awarded Player of the Season in 2008, when the club reached its first Champions League final. Given English football’s trend away from the use of an unrestricted number 10, Cole’s flair and entertaining manner were perhaps not fully exploited, but he was a player who consistently brought the fun element and contributed to Chelsea’s rise as a Premier League giant.

Eden Hazard

Following Mata’s departure, Eden Hazard changed his shirt number from 17 to 10 before the 2014/15 season, and he had a fantastic season, helping the Blues win the Premier League and the League Cup. During that season, the Belgian also won a number of individual awards. In the same year, he became the first Chelsea player to win both the Footballer of the Year and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year awards.
