It was hard to believe that Fernando Torres was just 23 years old when he arrived at Liverpool in 2007, ready to unleash havoc on Premier League defenders. It’s hard to forget how terrific he was at Liverpool, despite his disastrous time at Chelsea.
He is regarded as one of Liverpool’s all-time top attackers after netting 81 goals in 142 games. We’ve compiled a list of our favorite Fernando Torres moments while playing for Liverpool.
- Liverpool vs Chelsea (2008-09)
Despite Liverpool’s dominance, Chelsea held on for a point that was crucial to their season. The huge man came on in the 89th minute with the score still 0-0. As a result of Fernando Torres’s near-post header, the Kop went wild. After that, he did his trademark slide before settling into a sitting position to celebrate. Torres added a second to give Liverpool a resounding 2-0 victory and keep them in the hunt for the Premier League title. He couldn’t have predicted it, but El Nino did have an excellent campaign.
- Manchester United vs Liverpool (oct 2009) – Dropping Rio Ferdinand
As you’ll see, Torres had a number of memorable performances against Manchester United, including one in a 2-0 victory over the Red Devils in October 2009. In front of the Kop, the Spanish striker shrugged off Rio Ferdinand and fired the ball into the top corner of the net. Ferdinand was a formidable opponent when he was at his peak. Nonetheless, Torres left him teetering on the brink of death.
- Blackburn Rovers vs Liverpool – Stunning Volley
Torres scored one of the finest goals in front of the Anfield Road end on a sun-kissed Anfield surface. Incredibly, the Spaniard was able to bring the ball down with his chest and then volley it up and over the Rovers goalkeeper. This is mind-blowing. El Nino scored a world-class goal by a man who was perhaps the best striker in the world at the time, facing the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand as he struck the ball.
- Liverpool vs Manchester United (oct 2009)- Destroying Nemanja Vidic at Old Trafford
Torres was an outstanding player. At the time, he was regarded as one of the top strikers in the division. A few goals were scored against United by him. When the Reds visited Manchester United in March 2009, it was Torres who prevailed over Vidic in a pulsating duel. Torres only needed a split second of hesitancy from Vidic to pounce, as the Liverpool No.9 raced away to set up a historic 4-1 win for Rafa Benitez’s side.
- Liverpool vs Real Madrid – Spinning a World Cup Winner
After his nightmare with Fernando Torres, some believe Fabio Cannavaro is still haunted by the memory. It was mind-boggling how the 2006 Ballon d’Or winner was able to freeze in mid-air. Iker Casillas prevented Torres from scoring when the Italian regained his composure after El Nino had already sent the ball go bound.
