Sami Hyypia joined Liverpool in 1999 and formed a formidable defensive partnership with Stephane Henchoz and then with Jamie Carragher. It was this pairing which helped Liverpool to win the Champions League in the 2004/05 season.

3. Steve Bruce, Gary Palister | Manchester United

This partnership is arguably the best defensive partnership Manchester United have ever had. These two were inseparable in the first 4 seasons of the Premier League, winning three of them.

Steve Bruce captained the team to the double in 1993-94. and Gary Pallister made the team of the year from 1992 to 1995.

2. Tony Adams, Steve Bould | Arsenal
