5 Great Players Who Found Success After Leaving Chelsea

In the last 10-15 years, Chelsea has been one of the most successful clubs in the world.

But numerous times in the past, after they have signed a player, they would either put them into the academy or send them on loan, thereby giving those raising youngsters a little chance to blossom at the club.

However, they have been some players and youngsters who have had to leave the club to become great, and below are five of them.

  • Kevin De Bruyne

We all know the successes Kevin De Bruyne has achieved at Manchester City, but so may have not been the case if the Belgian did not leave Stamford Bridge when he did.

Kevin De Bruyne joined Chelsea from Genk in 2012, but he struggled for game time at the club. Jose Mourinho was the only manager that showed faith in him, giving him a short run in the team at the start of the 2013/14 season. However, he was sold to Wolfsburg the following season, and 18 months later, Manchester City came calling.

  • Daniel Sturridge

Signed in 2009 with a reputation of being one of the best England youngsters. Daniel Sturridge failed to break into Chelsea’s first team, having made just 63 Premier League appearances in three and a half seasons. He later joined Liverpool in 2013 and proved instrumental for the club. He and Luis Suarez tore apart the league and lead the Reds close to the Premier League title in 2014.

  • Romelu Lukaku

£10 million signing Romelu Lukaku made just 15 appearances during his first spell at Stamford Bridge. He spent most of his time in Chelsea on loan at West Brom and Everton. However, Everton eventually liked him and sealed a permanent move for the Belgium international. He stayed at Everton permanently for three years before joining Manchester United in 2017 and then Inter Milan in 2019, before returning to Chelsea last year.

  • Mohamed Salah

Before joining Liverpool in 2017, Mohamed Salah was once a Chelsea player. He spent two seasons at the club but spent most of it playing on loan at Fiorentina and Roma. Despite being on a successive loan spell, he failed to break into Chelsea’s first team and was sold to Liverpool. Since joining the Reds, Mohamed Salah has won the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, Super Cup, Club World Cup, and other domestic titles.

  • Juan Cuadrado

Having been one of the stars in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, there were expectations from the Columbia player when he sealed a move to Stamford Bridge six months later. But just like many, he failed to impress at the club and spent most of his time on loan at Juventus before signing for the club permanently in 2017. Since joining the Italian side, he has won four Italian Cup, two Italian Super Cup, and five Scuddeto.
