5 Footballers Who Weren’t As Good As Their Big Brothers

UrbanNewsGh looks at six players who weren’t as good as their brothers, including brothers of Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku.

Most of us have fond childhood memories of kicking a ball around with our siblings, so it’s no surprise that the game has seen some infamous brother pairings over the years.

But, as we all know all too well, not everyone is on the same level. It’s an unfortunate burden for some of us (the better siblings), but it must be even more difficult to bear in the spotlight of the professional game.

Can you imagine trying to live up to the accolades Wayne Rooney has received throughout his career?

Or trying hard to keep up with Romelu Lukaku and his endless stream of mega-money transfers?

Here, UrbanNewsGh looks at five footballers who have been overshadowed by their more famous older brothers.

  • John Rooney (Wayne Rooney)

While his older brother became the all-time leading goalscorer at one of the world’s biggest clubs, John Rooney has taken a slightly different path.

The 31-year-old has spent most of his career in the lower leagues, playing for a number of EFL clubs.

Rooney, like his brother, began his career at Everton after joining the club as a youngster. But he didn’t cut it at Goodison Park and was released at the age of 12.

Macclesfield gave him his senior debut at the age of 18, but he was lured away to America after only two years with the minnows.

  • Jordan Lukaku (Romelu Lukaku)

Jordan Lukaku is only one year younger than Romelu, but their football careers are already poles apart.

Lukaku junior has fared better than the majority of the siblings on this list, but he has fallen short of his goalscoring brother, who has racked up nearly £300 million in total transfer fees during his career.

He is a full-back by trade who began his career at Anderlecht alongside his brother. Lukaku thrived during a three-year stint with Anderlecht’s rivals, Oostende, after failing to make the grade with the Belgian giants.

His form in Belgium earned him a big move to Lazio in the summer of 2016, but he’s been plagued by injuries since then.

  • Laurence Maguire (Harry Maguire)

Harry Maguire is another England star with a younger brother who has been a non-league fixture for a long time.

Laurence Maguire is currently struggling for promotion to the EFL with Chesterfield, who are currently in the play-offs.

Maguire, 25, is four years younger than his famous brother and a strong center-half. Maguire junior has spent his entire career with Chesterfield after rising through the ranks at the Technique Stadium, appearing in just under 150 games.

  • Felix Kroos (Toni Kroos)

Felix Kroos is only one year younger than Toni Kroos, but he has already retired from professional football.

Kroos junior retired from football last summer and is now the assistant coach of Union Berlin’s U19 team.

Kroos spent his entire playing career in Germany, playing for clubs such as Werder Bremen and Union Berlin.

While he never reached the heights that his brother did, Kroos junior was capped by the German national team at the youth level, though he did not earn a senior cap.

  • Yoan Zouma (Kurt Zouma)

Yoan Zouma, Kurt Zouma’s younger brother, made headlines earlier this year for all the wrong reasons after filming his brother inexplicably kicking his cat. However, Zouma hasn’t exactly been in the spotlight for football reasons during his brief career.

While his brother won both the Premier League and the Champions League during his time at Chelsea, the young Zouma has struggled to replicate that level of success.

The 23-year-old was drawn to England as a teenager by Bolton, but he failed to make the grade in League One and was released after only a few appearances.
