Ronald Koeman becomes the 25th former Barcelona player to be named head coach, with the Catalan giants often turning on former players to manage the team.
Koeman had a lot of success at Camp Nou as a player, but he’ll have his job cut out for him if he wants to turn around a club that’s in disarray after a disastrous 2019/20 season and is in in need of a thorough overhaul.
Here’s a rundown of every former Barcelona player who has been employed as a head coach, as well as how they’ve done.
1. Johan Cruyff
Johan Cruyff was the first Barcelona player to later serve as manager of the club.
As a player, he spent five seasons at Barcelona and won several trophies. As a manager, he spent 8 years at the club and won a number of trophies including European Cup and La Liga.
2. Luis Enrique
As a player, Enrique spent 8 seasons at Barcelona and won the La Liga and a number of other trophies. He was appointed Barcelona head coach in the year 2014 and he won the treble the following year.
3. Pep Guardiola
As a player, Guardiola spent 11 seasons at Barcelona and won several trophies including the European Cup and La Liga in that period. As a manager, he was in charge of Barcelona for four years, winning the treble in 2009.
4. Xavi Hernandez
Xavi spent many years playing for Barcelona and won lots of trophies. He is currently the club manager, having been appointed in the summer of 2021.
