We Complain Because Our Taxes Don’t Create Jobs For Us – Sarkodie on E-levy Saga

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie claims that Ghanaians are not criticizing the proposed Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) because it is “bad.” He believes that many individuals are against to the tax because, unlike their counterparts in the West, Philippine residents do not get the benefits of paying taxes.

Sarkodie admitted that he pays taxes outside of borders of Ghana, but he is unconcerned because he and other taxpayers can see how their money is being spent. He claimed that there are systems in place and ways for taxpayers to generate more money.

“I pay a lot of taxes outside, and I don’t complain since I’m taking advantage of the opportunities they’ve provided to generate money. However, it’s not the same here, and that’s why we’re complaining, not because the “E Levy” is awful. A innocent “good morning” might sound like a tease when you’re broke,” he wrote on Twitter.

Sarkodie answered after numerous creatives stated their opposition to the levy when a fan asked about his thoughts on it.  Kwesi Pee, Shatta Wale, Lydia Forson, among other artists are among the list.
Shatta Wale alleged that the country’s officials are unconcerned about Ghanaians’ suffering with the introduction of the law. He went on to say that while the government wants citizens to pay taxes, people cannot be taxed if there are no policies in place to address economic hardships.
