Following the arrest of social activist Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor in Ghana for threatening to stage a coup, the Ghana Police Service has verified his detention.
According to a statement signed by the Director-General, Public Affairs, DCOP Kwesi Ofori and published on Saturday, February 12, 2022, the convener of the pressure group #FixTheCountry Movement was detained by the Tema Regional Police Command on Saturday, February 12, 2022.
Following an alleged social media post in which he stated that if the E-Levy Bill is enacted by Parliament, Mr. Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor would stage his own coup, Mr. Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor was detained.
In an earlier statement on Friday, February 11, the social activist’s family and friends claimed that he had been kidnapped as a result of his criticism of the administration.
In a statement released by the #FixTheCountry movement, it was stated that “the last time his family and lawyers heard from him was at 5:29 pm, at which point he informed them that some unidentified armed men had accosted him on his way into the arrival hall at [Kotoka International Airport] KIA,” according to the statement.
