Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has arrested 13 persons for illegally mining in the Eastern Region. This was done in order to curb illigal mining in Ghana.
The suspects include Ghanaians and other West African nationals.
They were caught mining on the Birim River at Akyem-Mampong near Anyinam, Accra Village Nkatieso, and Mokyere. The taskforce have destroyed over hundreds of chanfang machines and other mining equipments.
Sampson Kofi Wiredu, Vice President of the Association said the exercise was to assist government fight illegal mining in Ghana. He added that their arrest was to clean up the mess created by these galamseyers.
This arrest follows a similar exercise conducted by the Lands and Natural Resources ministry. It was organized at Birim North and Asante Akyem South districts of the Eastern and Ashanti regions respectively.
The special ministerial operation led by Deputy Minister, George Mireku Duker, saw the arrest of six illegal miners. They also destroyed several mining equipment used by the illegal miners.
